Colors cast long shadows on brain activity.

چکیده
Light reaching the retina of the eye enables us to form images of our environment. A much older evolutionary benefit of light, though only recognized as important for humans in the past half a century, is that its 24-h irradiance profile informs the biological clock of the brain. The brain exploits this nonimageforming (NIF) information to optimally synchronize and prepare physiology and behavior to the environmental opportunities and hazards of that cycle with 24-h predictability. However, it has only been for the last decade that not only circadian NIF effects, but also acute NIF effects of light on the brain, have been appreciated. Acute NIF effects are supported by retinal projections to brain structures involved in the regulation of sleep, alertness, mood, and cognition (1). In PNAS, Chellappa et al. (2) underscore the relevance of these projections for human cognitive brain activity. The report importantly extends their previous functional MRI (fMRI) studies showing that light intensity modulates brain activation of people performing a cognitive task. Chellappa et al. now show that the effect of light on brain activity depends on the color spectrum of light people were exposed to more than an hour before. Thus, colors cast long shadows on future brain activity.

Detection and Tracking of Moving
This paper presents a method for detection and tracking of moving cast shadows on a dominating scene background in a monocular video sequence. The method assumes moving shadows on a dominant smooth shaped background. The shadow causing light sources are assumed to be strong enough to cause visible temporal frame diierences by moving cast shadows. These diierences are detected and classiied into...
متن کاملThe perception of 3-D shape from shadows cast onto curved surfaces.
In a natural environment, cast shadows abound. Objects cast shadows both upon themselves and upon background surfaces. Previous research on the perception of 3-D shape from cast shadows has only examined the informativeness of shadows cast upon flat background surfaces. In outdoor environments, however, background surfaces often possess significant curvature (large rocks, trees, hills, etc.), a...
متن کاملPerception of Shadows in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
BACKGROUND Cast shadows in visual scenes can have profound effects on visual perception. Much as they are informative, they also constitute noise as they are salient features of the visual scene potentially interfering with the processing of other features. Here we asked i) whether individuals with autism can exploit the information conveyed by cast shadows; ii) whether they are especially sens...
متن کاملMy shadow, myself: cast-body shadows are embodied.
Objects that serve as extensions of the body can produce a sensation of embodiment, feeling as if they are a part of us. We investigated the characteristics that drive an object's embodiment, examining whether cast-body shadows, a purely visual stimulus, are embodied. Tools are represented as an extension of the body when they enable observers to interact with distant targets, perceptually dist...
متن کاملWhy cast shadows are expendable: insensitivity of human observers and the inherent ambiguity of cast shadows in pictorial art.
The kinds of visual cues artists choose to use or not use in their work can offer insight into perceptual processes. On the basis of the observed paucity of the use of cast shadow in pictorial art, we hypothesized that cast shadows might be relatively expendable as pictorial cues. In this study, we investigated two potential reasons for this expendability: first, viewers might be insensitive to...
